Welcome to an overview of our public speaking and advocacy training programs for lawyers. We offer lectures, small group workshops, and one-on-one coachings. We can also be part of your in-house advocacy skills programs, serving as part of your faculty. Our books, videos, articles, and written materials support your CLE requirements. Most programs are taught by either Brian K. Johnson or Marsha Hunter.

Speak Well as You Think on Your Feet for All Practice Areas
This in-house program includes a 60-minute lecture followed by 45-minute individual coaching sessions. An entire firm or department may attend the lecture, but there may not be enough time for all to receive an individual coaching. This program refines presentation skills in all practice areas and for all levels, from senior partners to junior associates. Advance preparation time is 15 minutes, and total time commitment per attorney is 2 hours. Day 1 includes a lecture and eight individual coaching sessions. Day 2 and subsequent days include twelve individual coaching sessions.
You may add small group sessions to this program, providing a mix of individual coachings and workshops. Three-hour workshops are limited to ten participants, who each make two or three presentations. Participants watch themselves on video with the entire group, then have the opportunity to stand up again and improve their skills.
The Articulate Advocate: Becoming More Fluent on Your Feet
This program for courtroom lawyers includes two intense days of short lectures by Johnson and Hunter, with several short presentations by participants. The presentations are recorded on video and constructively critiqued by the group. This program provides a high level of professional development for lawyers in a short intensive. It is ideal for senior associates or new partners in all practice areas. There is no case file; advance preparation required takes about 30 minutes. The program is limited to ten participants who commit two days to the course.
Interpersonal Communication Skills for New Lawyers
This program provides the fundamentals of professional speaking for younger associates. This is not a public speaking program, but rather a technique to apply the polish and precision of public speaking to the challenge of professional conversation. It provides new lawyers with the skills they need to report to practice groups and more senior lawyers. The course includes techniques to banish that accent of adolescence – um, like, you know – and the immature uptick of the questioning inflection that should be eliminated in a professional setting. We begin with a 60-minute lecture, followed by 30-minute one-on-one coachings or small group workshops.
Workshops for Women: Finding Your Assertive, Confident Voice
Women face a unique speaking challenge when communicating in a room full of men whose voices are often deeper, louder, and more resonant. This program focuses on how women can speak with articulate authority. It explores practical techniques for achieving confident, assertive communication. This interactive session is appropriate for both trial and corporate lawyers. Marsha Hunter, bringing her experience from teaching at the Center for Women in the Law at the University of Texas, in-house gender-specific programs, and numerous female-majority legal aid courses, is the trainer for the program.
Online Video Coaching
This economical alternative to bringing a consultant to your offices offers an ideal way to help lawyers who have a trial, motion, appeal, or important presentation in the near future. They can polish their presentation with a one-on-one coaching with Johnson or Hunter.
Using online coaching, your lawyers can make immediate improvements to their presentations as they stand in their office or conference room. In addition to just-in-time coaching for a specific presentation, online coaching is effective for attorneys who wish to polish speaking skills over several months of one-on-one work.
These coachings offer personal feedback about each individual’s public speaking skills. The goal is to improve fluency, eloquence, and confidence in every setting. Transactional attorneys bring their specific questions and challenges in speaking to colleagues, clients, or large groups. Attorneys rediscover what already works in their style and learn new techniques for the next stage of improvement.
Coachings build upon lawyers’ real-life experience, using issues and presentations from their current workload. They will get on their feet and push their speaking skills to the next level.
